Lithium batteries have become the preferred choice for modern campervan and racevan electrical systems thanks to their high performance, long lifespan, and excellent off-grid capability. Compared to traditional lead acid or AGM batteries, lithium batteries provide significantly more usable power, faster charging times, lower weight, and far greater efficiency.

One of the biggest advantages of lithium technology is Depth of Discharge (DoD). A standard lead acid battery should typically only be discharged to around 50% of its capacity to avoid damage and shorten lifespan, meaning a 100Ah lead battery realistically provides around 50Ah of usable power. In comparison, lithium batteries can safely discharge to 80–100%, giving you far more usable energy from the same battery size.

Lithium systems are ideal for powering high-demand appliances such as fridges, diesel heaters, coffee machines, induction hobs, inverters, TVs, lighting, and complete off-grid setups for extended periods without hook-up power.

Although lithium batteries have a higher upfront cost, they often work out more cost-effective long term due to their longer lifespan, faster charging capability, lighter weight, and increased usable capacity. AGM and Gel Carbon batteries remain a popular and reliable choice for many campervan and racevan owners, offering a solid balance between performance, durability, and affordability. They are ideal for customers wanting dependable off-grid power for lighting, fridges, water pumps, diesel heaters, and everyday leisure use without the higher upfront cost of lithium systems.

Compared to standard lead acid batteries, AGM and Gel Carbon technologies provide improved charging performance, greater vibration resistance, longer service life, and better deep-cycle capability. Gel Carbon batteries in particular offer enhanced recovery from deeper discharges and improved longevity, making them well suited to regular touring and off-grid adventures.

While AGM and Gel Carbon batteries do not provide the same usable capacity or depth of discharge as lithium systems, they remain an excellent option for many vehicle setups and budgets.
